Deutsche Bank's top executives are signaling they could raise the bank's financial targets when they report full year results in January, after a strong third quarter performance gave management confidence to think beyond its current goals.

Chief executive Christian Sewing told analysts he is "more than confident" the bank will hit its target of a return on tangible equity above 13% by 2028, and cautioned investors not to assume that figure is "the end game, not at all."

The numbers behind that confidence have been building for months. Nine month revenue reached 25.5 billion euros, keeping management on track for its goal of more than 33 billion euros in revenue for the full year. Profit before tax for the nine month period came in at 8.4 billion euros, a record for the bank, while return on tangible equity reached 11.5%, closing in on the 13% target originally set for 2028.

Executives said they would share more detail on where the bank sees room to raise its ambitions when it reports full year results in January.
