Uber is eliminating roughly 3,300 jobs, about 10 percent of its global workforce, in the company's largest round of cuts since the pandemic as it reshapes itself around a future increasingly built on autonomous vehicles.

Chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi told employees the reductions are meant to strip out layers of management that built up as Uber grew, arguing that fewer layers will speed up decision making and reduce duplicated work across teams. The company plans to cut by roughly 20 percent the number of employees sitting seven or more reporting levels below the chief executive, while nearly halving the number of teams that have only one or two direct reports.

## Consolidating Around Fewer, Bigger Teams

As part of the overhaul, Uber is merging its engineering, science, and delivery organizations and folding its delivery operations for restaurants, retail, and direct shipments into a single structure under fewer leaders. The changes come even as the company continues to post double digit revenue growth, underscoring that the cuts are aimed at organizational structure rather than a response to weak demand.

Uber is also tightening its remote work policy alongside the restructuring, limiting fully remote positions to roughly 1 percent of its workforce while keeping its rule that most employees spend at least three days a week in the office.

## Betting Big on Autonomous Rides

Khosrowshahi has framed the reorganization as preparation for what he calls an autonomous future, as Uber pours billions of dollars into its robotaxi partnerships and technology. The ride hailing pioneer, which built its business on a vast network of human drivers, is increasingly positioning itself as the software and marketplace layer connecting riders to a growing mix of human driven and self driving vehicles.

That shift puts Uber in more direct competition with companies building their own autonomous vehicle fleets, and the leaner management structure is meant to let the company move faster as it negotiates partnerships and rolls out robotaxi service in new markets. Whether the cuts will be enough to keep pace with rivals investing heavily in self driving technology remains an open question, but the scale of the reduction signals how seriously Uber is treating the shift away from its traditional driver based model.
