A wave of companies built around hoarding cryptocurrency on their balance sheets has struggled badly over the past year, with many so called digital asset treasury firms seeing their stock prices collapse. One notable exception has emerged from the wreckage: Hyperliquid Strategies, whose shares have climbed roughly 251 percent since the start of the year even as rivals have floundered.
Digital asset treasury companies, often referred to as DATs, are publicly traded vehicles built around accumulating a specific cryptocurrency, a model popularized by Michael Saylor's Bitcoin focused Strategy. Many newer DATs following that playbook have run into trouble as crypto prices stagnated, leaving their stock trading at steep discounts to the value of the coins they hold, a pattern some in the industry have dubbed a death spiral.
An Active Business Rather Than a Passive Vault
Hyperliquid Strategies, which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker PURR, has taken a different approach since launching roughly ten months ago. Rather than simply buying and holding its target token and waiting for its price to rise, the company has built an operating model that generates revenue from its holdings of HYPE, the native token of the Hyperliquid trading platform. That revenue lets the company continually add to its reserves, increasing the amount of cryptocurrency backing each share of stock over time instead of leaving that backing static.
