An investment group backed by KKR co-founders Henry Kravis and George Roberts has agreed to buy a 42% stake in Valencia CF, the Spanish football club controlled by Singapore billionaire Peter Lim, in a deal that values the club at 1.25 billion euros, or roughly $1.4 billion, including debt.

The stake is being acquired by Pitchwise Holdings, a consortium of private family offices and institutional investors led by sports executives Ann Rodriguez and Corey Woolfolk. The group also counts Penner Sports, the investment vehicle of Walmart chairman Greg Penner and his wife Carrie, a granddaughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton, among its backers. Alongside buying the stake, Pitchwise is putting 100 million euros of fresh capital directly into the club.

The stake is being sold by Meriton Holdings, Lim's investment vehicle and Valencia's majority owner since he took control of the club in 2014. Meriton will keep a majority stake in Valencia after the deal closes, and Lim's son, Kiat Lim, will remain as club president.

The deal adds Valencia to a growing list of European football clubs attracting capital from US private equity and sports focused investment vehicles, and gives KKR's founders a direct stake in a storied LaLiga club that has struggled on the pitch in recent seasons even as European football valuations have continued climbing.
