Bill Gross, the founder of Idealab, has launched a free platform called Idealab.ai that lets anyone search through 1.2 million AI generated business ideas and start turning one into a company. The ideas were pulled together from 17 million sources and filtered using 31 methods Gross has developed over decades for spotting opportunities, with roughly 100,000 harmful or unworkable ideas stripped out along the way.

Gross has framed the project in sweeping terms. "This is the biggest thing I could do to have the most positive impact on the world," he has said. He points to Idealab itself, the incubator he started in 1996 that has produced more than 175 companies, as a comparison: that model let him pursue roughly 10 companies at a time, while he says this platform effectively lets him pursue 10,000 at once.

The practical details are built in too. The platform surfaces 32,000 startup ideas that can reportedly be started for $50,000 or less, and includes a patent search tool layered into the idea pool, with reference points like Caltech's roughly 9,978 patents and 3M's roughly 21,000 shown as examples of what is searchable. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince has committed $100,000 in company credits to every startup that launches through the platform, saying the system will unlock more entrepreneurship and help solve some genuinely important problems.

Gross has set an explicit target of helping create 1 million new businesses and 100 million jobs worldwide through the platform. Fortune AI editor Jeremy Kahn called it a fascinating use case for AI that could meaningfully supercharge entrepreneurship, while also cautioning that it remains unclear whether the jobs created this way will be enough to offset the jobs AI is expected to displace elsewhere in the economy.
